Advantages to buying from a NY State licensed kennel?
NY State is one of the few states in the country that governs the sale of
pets and has laws protecting the consumer from poor breedings and less
than reputable breeders. A puppy "lemon law" if you will. Backyard
breeders and unlicensed kennels are not bound by laws which protect
you the consumer from poor breedings or unprofessional breeders. (You
are on your own with these breeders)
*NY State licensed kennels are legally bound to the laws outlined by
the state which is geared towards protecting you the consumer and the
health and well being of all animals raised on the licensed kennel
premises.
*NY State licensed kennels are subject to unannounced inspections by
the state (which inspect conditions adult dogs and puppies are living in).
*NY State requires and audits all required veterinarian examinations of
all puppies being sold on premises.
Unfortunately, the state does not require licensed kennels to screen their
breeding stock for genetic defects. You are on your own finding a breeder that
does screen their breeding stock for genetic disorders (most important the
hips and eyes). There is only one organization the AKC (American Kennel
Club) recognizes for certifying hips and that is the OFA (Orthopedic
Foundation For Animals) www.offa.org The only national registry/organization
that certifies the eyes free of genetic disorders is the CERF (Canine Eye
Registration Foundation). Any reputable breeder should have documents from
OFA and CERF on their breeding stock. In summery, Central New York
Waterdogs is proud to participate in the NY State licensing/inspection program
but please keep in mind that this is not a blanket endorsement for all licensed
kennels. The only way to be certain that your new puppy comes from a
genetically sound family tree, is through the two organizations mentioned
above and only the two organizations mentioned above.
* Usually the only difference between a poorly bred puppy and a well bred
puppy is a couple hundred dollars. The money you will spend on future vet
bills from poor breeding and unprofessional breeders usually will substantially
exceed the couple hundred dollars you tried to save on your purchase. For
